One of my favorite destinations for the FIBA European Championships after last year’s pulsing crowds raised the roof on Centro de Desportos e Congressos de Matosinhos in the u16 B Division tournament. As last year, the host nation will play the last game of the night in the main gym which holds over 2000 in Matosinhos the coastal suburb just outside Porto.
I flew into Porto, most college coaches arriving for the action on July 23rd may find Lisbon has better connections from across the pond and then fly or train up north.
If arriving into Porto as soon as you exit the baggage hall get straight across to the Information desk to purchase your tram tickets, the best way to travel around by far. Drop down a level across the walk way and get the tram heading into town, the main station where several hotels are located is Trindade. I switched over to the blue line and headed towards the beach yesterday, not for a swim but my hotel is located near the main gym.
The nearest stop to the main gym is Parque Real, rather than get a taxi you can take the short walk up the hill, past the fountains, along Rua da Cruz de Pau, when you get to the top of the hill on your left you will find one of the best spots to eat nearby, (freshly grilled fish on the out door Bbq a local favorite) after the last game not many of the local places are still open so eat big at Lunch! Inside the stadium is bar which serves snacks and you can see the long green building of the gym when you turn left at the top of the hill. First game tips at 2pm local time.
